Pick Me Up: My Fair Lady

MY FAIR LADY

Grand Opera House, York

Pick Me Up's  production of My Fair Lady was a huge hit with audiences at York’s Grand Opera House and hailed as “a very enjoyable triumph” by the York Press.

My Fair Lady is the story of irascible phonetics professor Henry Higgins and Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle, who he bets he can transform into a duchess.

Based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, it's often described as the perfect musical – with witty book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and the wonderful music of Frederick Loewe.

The timeless score features songs like Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?, With a Little Bit of Luck, The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night, On the Street Where You Live, Get Me to the Church on Time, and I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face

My Fair Lady was a massive hit when it opened on Broadway in 1956 starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews. When it transferred to London's West End it had a record-breaking run before being turned into an Oscar-winning film featuring Harrison and Audrey Hepburn.

Two of York's most popular performers led the cast – Rory Mulvihill plays Higgins, and Eliza is Toni Feetenby, whose previous roles with Pick Me Up include Joyce in Betty Blue Eyes and the Baker's Wife in Into The Woods.

Director Robert Readman assembled a strong supporting cast including Mark Hird as Colonel Pickering, Andy Stone as Alfred Doolittle, Sam Hird as lovelorn Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Barbara Johnson as Mrs Higgins, and Sandy Nicholson as Mrs Pearce.

And the review by the York Press said: "One of the real successes of the show is the performance of the orchestra under the musical direction of Sam Johnson."
