GYPSY
Grand Opera House, York
Curtain up, light the lights … Gypsy, one of the greatest of all Broadway musicals, returns to York for the first time in 25 years in a new production by Pick Me Up Theatre.
The show tells the story of Momma Rose, her two daughters June and Louise, and the struggle to make a living on the 1930s Vaudeville circuit.
It’s loosely based on the memoirs of the celebrated striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee and focuses on her fearsomely driven mother Rose – the archetypal “Stage Mother”.
The songs in the show have become standards of the musical theatre canon – including Let Me Entertain You, Rose’s Turn, Together (Wherever We Go), Gotta Get a Gimmick and the show-stopping Everything’s Coming Up Roses.
With music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents, Gypsy was a smash-hit when it first appeared on Broadway in 1959 – and the recent London revival won four Olivier Awards including best actress in a musical for Imelda Staunton as Rose.
Susannah Baines – Mrs Lovett in Pick Me Up’s acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd – plays Rose in Robert Readman’s production at York's Grand Opera House.
